The MOQ reality most quotes leave out
The per-unit price you are shown assumes a production volume. Below the floor, fabric and filler mills charge scrap minimums and the unit cost climbs. For custom plush:
- Pilot: ~100–500 pcs — highest unit cost, lowest commitment. Good for market testing.
- Small batch: 500–999 pcs — unit cost starts to fall as setup spreads.
- Bulk: 1,000–4,900 pcs — real economies of scale begin.
- Mass run: 5,000+ pcs — lowest unit cost, longest lead time.
Requesting a quote at your actual target volume matters more than the headline "from $X". A price quoted at 5,000 units is meaningless if you need 200.

How much does a custom plush prototype cost?
A single plush prototype typically runs USD 500–1,500 all-in for design, pattern, one physical sample and one revision round. PVC/ABS/resin figures add tooling of USD 500–3,000 per mold. These are development costs, separate from per-unit production pricing.
Why does the first sample cost more than a production unit?
Sampling is mostly fixed labour: modelling, pattern cutting and hand-building one piece. Production spreads that setup across many units, so per-unit cost drops sharply once tooling exists.
What is a realistic MOQ for custom plush?
Pilot runs start around 100–500 pieces. Below that, mills may charge scrap minimums, pushing unit cost up. True per-unit economies begin around 1,000+ pieces.
Does tooling cost repeat on every order?
No. Once a mold or die is made and approved, it is reused for reorders. You pay tooling once; reorders only pay for material, labour and QC.

Supply a clean reference, approve the tech pack before sampling, and batch your revision requests. Most wasted cost comes from unclear briefs and scattered change rounds.
